SHE

  • I had a rest day in Figeac. The 2nd night began calmly.
  • The dormitory had 6 beds and there were only 2 of us. An early night after the previous nights drama. The lights off and nearly asleep.
  • Then she arrived. None of the usual discretion of a late night arrival. Clanging, rustling of bags, ablutions, bright lights.
  • Eventually she was in bed. Silence at last, briefly. Then the thunder began. All night there was thunder.
  • I had noticed her starting a late meal when I was on my way to the dormitory. She was not one of the better creations of the species.
  • She was not created for sleeping in dormitories. She was created for sleeping in a tent in the fields amongst the bellowing bulls.

  1. She is unfortunately all too familiar in shared accommodation! I had to put up with a midnight arrival on the Tasmanian ferry, meaning my eyeballs were like a snail's the following day as I tried to drive sensibly to the Tasman Peninsula.
