Leaving Espalion
Day 10, Wednesday 13th to Estaing. It had rained the night before. The day started peacefully in the fog. Then a modest climb to a plateau with a panoramic view over the Vallee du Lot. On the way up to the plateau the steep twisting uphill track turned to liquid earth, not like the comparatively benign liquid snow days earlier. One faltering step at a time. Eventually the plateau with a sealed road, briefly. Then a track that reminded me of the Gary Highway I had driven on years ago - a highway needing an all-terrain vehicle, which I had.
Yes, there is a Gary Highway in remote Western Australia built in the 1950s by one man, a grader, and his dog. It has not been maintained since it was built, much like the track today.
Estaing
Basil Fawlty would love this place.
